Marchantia polymorpha is only one of many species of liverworts. Liverworts are non-vascular plants. They are thought to be the oldest land plants, probably the first to develop on land. Marchantia polymorpha is the most common of the liverworts, appearing often in nurseries and places with a good water-supply. It can occasionally be found on sidewalks where plants are regularly watered.
