Butterfly bushes originated in China. They have been spread as ornamental plants, and quite ornamental they are, with impressive clusters of flowers. It has been recognized however, that this plant can be invasive, and it has been added to many invasive plant indexes. The plant pictured in the first picture above was found in an area of weeds along a backroad next to a gas station a half a block from the Broad and South Garden, where we have a large one (pictured in the second photograph) in the corner nearest the gas station. I am fairly certain that the first pictured plant grew up from a seed of the plant in our garden. Unfortunately, it was knocked down when someone hacked all the weeds of the area down.
